The mission of Cosmetology is to provide the necessary training in
theory and clinical knowledge for the student to be successful
within the cosmetology industry. Instruction is designed to qualify
students for employment upon graduation and to aid in the passing of
the State Board of Cosmetology Licensing Exam, which consists of a
written test and practical test. Licensing is required for
individuals to be employed as cosmetologist or nail technicians in
the State of Tennessee. The program also provides for the upgrading
and updating of employed workers.
Classroom instruction and practical learning experiences are
interwoven into a variety of beauty treatments, including the care
and beautification of hair, complexion, and hands. The course of
study includes hands-on and classroom instruction in giving
shampoos, rinses, scalp treatments, hair styling, setting, cutting,
tinting, bleaching, permanent waving, facials, manicures, hand and
arm massages, bacteriology, anatomy, hygiene, sanitation, and salon
management. Safety and customer relations are also emphasized
throughout the program.
Much time is spent in the salon (lab) training area. Patrons from
outside the class come into the salon to take advantage of the
services offered by the program; they, in return, provide the
"live-work" experiences needed to make the training most effective.
Two years of high school or the equivalent thereof is required for
admission. The Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology Law requires all
enrolled students in a school of Cosmetology to wear uniforms of the
same color (white) with white shoes.
Currently, the State of Tennessee requires cosmetologist to complete
1500 hours of training, manicurist complete 600 hours of training,
and shampooist complete 300 hours of training. The State of
Tennessee, with the State Board of Cosmetology, reserves the right
to enact legislative changes at any time, without notice. Change in
course content, hours required, or admission requirements would be
applicable to current students, persons on the waiting list, and
applicants to the program.
