The
mission of the Machine Tool Program is to provide the necessary
training, work experiences, and related technical knowledge for
employment in the metal working industry. The work of machine tool
operators, machinists, and other related occupations requires skill in
machining metal by operating several machine tools, such as milling
machines, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and the ability to use
precision measuring tools.
The course in Machine Shop is designed to develop basic skills in
machine tool operation and provide students experience on a variety of
machine tools similar to those which they will operate after graduation.
Instruction is given in related blueprint reading, mathematics,
precision measuring, and basic metallurgy, which includes properties of
metal, workable characteristics, heat treatment of metals, and relative
hardness.
The advanced machine shop student becomes proficient at both set-up and
operation of a wide variety of metal working machines. Using set-up and
operation skills, the student can transform standard metal shapes into
finished products as specified by shop drawings. The student also
receives training in computer controlled metal working machines
including computer programming.
CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining and computer-aided manufacturing are high tech modern day methods of machining. In
conventional machining, a complex work piece may have required set up on
several machining tools to complete the specific machining tasks. With
the advancing technology of the CNC Mill came the concept of a machining
center which may be programmed to perform a wide variety of machining
tasks on the one machining tool. Students at TTCH are provided the
opportunity to obtain competence and skill within this growing field.
Most employers in the machining field are presently requiring a working
knowledge of CNC.
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to go into the
industry as a machine tool operator, set-up operator production tender
or machinist.
