The mission of the Practical Nursing Program is to provide the training and learning experiences necessary to enable graduates to obtain the basic competencies needed to secure licensure and become gainfully employed. The program is a 1296- hour course, designed to be completed within one year. Instruction is provided in both classroom and clinical. Approximately half of the instructional hours are spent in the classroom and the other half in clinical.

Classes are located on campus and off-campus in the instructional service center sites of Maury Regional Medical Center, Wayne Medical Center, and Spring Hill GM location. Clinical experience is conducted at each of the area hospitals, area nursing homes, clinics, day care and mental health facilities. Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to take the state examination to become Licensed Practical Nurses. Once licensed, employment opportunities are available in a variety of health care settings.

Applications are only available at the Mandatory Information Session which is held twice each year. The Mandatory Information/Application Sessions will be held once in January for the Hohenwald class starting the following May, and again in May for classes starting the following September. You MUST attend this session to apply. High school diploma or the equivalent and a minimum of a passing score on the entrance exam are required for admission to the nursing program. Applicants are admitted by rank of score on the entrance exam with submission of completed application packet and process. If accepted into the program, a physical exam must be performed by a licensed physician prior to the first day of class and a completed form returned to the Technology Center. Medical clearance is required for any previous condition (s) which warrant clearance.

Effective July 1, 2011 all students enrolled in Practical Nursing, Surgical Technology, or CNA programs must provide proof of immunity to Hepatitis B before having patient contact.  The Hepatitis B vaccine is administered in 3 doses over a period of 6 months.  This requirement is in addition to all other immunization requirements for enrollment to TTCH. Vaccination requirements are to be provided when application is submitted.

Currently, the State of Tennessee requires practical nurses to complete 1296 hours of training and meet above stated admissions requirements. The State of Tennessee, with the State Board of Nursing, reserves the right to enact legislative changes at any time, without notice. Change in course content, hours required, or admission requirements could be effected and would be applicable to current students and applicants to the program.

The Practical Nursing program is offered at four sites, the main campus in Hohenwald, and three instructional service centers located in Columbia, Spring Hill, and Waynesboro. The placement rates are an average of the four sites.

The Tennessee Technology Center at Hohenwald's placement rates are based on the 2010 Completion, Placement, and Licensure Report. The report is submitted annually to the Council on Occupational Education for continued accreditation.
